CPD/CME Points: 0.5
An operation for moderate to severe Hallux Valgus deformity which can be technically challenging.
The choice of an opening wedge osteotomy (as demonstrated in this technique) avoids the shortening of the 1st Ray which can occur with the use of a closing wedge but careful soft tissue balancing is required.
Almost always a more distal osteotomy is also required (usually an Akin).
There is a good choice of purpose designed plates of very different profiles (some suited only to the larger metatarsal) and the Surgeon should ensure an appropriate sized implant is used.
