Der Gelenkersatz von Swanson wurde Mitte der 1960er Jahre beschrieben. Swanson bezeichnete dieses Implantat als ‘lasttragendes flexibles Scharnier’. Dies ist immer noch die am häufigsten durchgeführte prothetische Arthroplastik bei rheumatoider Arthritis.

Es gibt drei Hauptdesigns des Implantats. Das ursprüngliche Swanson-Design (Wright Medical), das flexible Implantat von Small Joint Innovations und NeuFlex (DePuy).
